Five Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 24

Shop to support breast cancer research, check out an author event or head to some local college events.

1. College night. Does your teen need some help writing that college essay? The Newton Free Library will host a program tonight titled "College Admissions Essay Writing 101" with Debra Berger. The program starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. And if you are still in the market for schools, check out the college fair at Newton North High School from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

2. Coffee connect. The Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce hosts monthly "coffee connects" to help members network. This month's coffee connect will be held this morning at 8 a.m. at Carroll Center for the Blind. 

3. Shop to support breast cancer research. Bloomingdale's will donate 10 percent of customers' total purchases today to the Ellie Fund (receipts must be turned in to customer service by 9 p.m.) The Chestnut Hill Bloomingdales will also host informal modeling, light bites, pink manicures and more. Suggested donation is $15. VIP tickets are available and include a gift bag.

4. Author event. Newtonville Books will host author B.A. Shapiro tonight, who will talk about her latest book The Art Forger.
