[Updated 4:40 p.m.] Three Days Later, Some Newton Residents Still Without Power

According to NSTAR's website, approximately 780 customers in Newton are now without power, or around 1.8 percent of the total customers

This number is up from earlier today; there were 471 outages reported at noon.

that as the power company works on restoring electricity to homes, they sometimes need to cut power to a whole circuit to make the repairs, as NSTAR employees cannot work on the power lines while they are live.

However, Newton resident Nancy Brown reported this afternoon that power is back on at Day Street. Earlier today, residents on that street were still in the dark. 

Crews can be spotted around Newton and some roads are closed for clean-up. Grant Avenue in Newton Centre was still closed as of 4 p.m.

As of noon on Tuesday, NSTAR is reporting 471 customers in Newton are still without power following Saturday night's storm, which is approximately 1.2 percent of the total customers in the city. 

Yesterday, the utility company said full restoration to the city is likely to come by Wednesday evening. That estimate is the same as of noon today. 

According to Newton resident Nancy Brown, several houses on Day Street were still without power as of this morning. Those residents lost power around 9 p.m. Saturday night, Brown said in an email.

After Saturday night's storm, . 

The city has not opened an emergency shelter, however, residents without power are encouraged to stay with friends and family, or in a hotel. The r and are also open if residents need heat or an internet connection. 

Residents who spot any weather-related issues around town are encouraged to dial 311 from any Newton landline or call 617-796-1000 from any cell phone to report problems to City Hall customer service representatives.

The city is also urging residents to be careful when eating food left in the house, as many items will go bad during a prolonged power outage. For additional tips on food safety, residents can contact the city's Health and Human Services Department at 617-796-1420.

All downed wires should be reported to the Police Department at 617-796-2100.
