Newton FAQs: Why are there cobblestones along the Commonwealth Avenue carriage road?

Why are there cobblestones at all the intersections along the Commonwealth Avenue carriage road?

The cobblestones are a decorative feature to the road.  In most locations, they are stable and serve their purpose well.  In a few locations (i.e. in low-lying areas), the cobblestones are in disrepair due to years of water and street maintenance.  The Transportation Division is in the process of investigating alternatives in these problem areas that will continue the decorative feel of the carriage road but with a material that may fare better in harsh New England winters.
