Newton FAQs: Why is my sewer bill so high?

Why is my sewer bill so high?

The amount of money the City must pay for sewer is fixed by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MRWA) which controls the infrastructure.  The fairest way the City has been able to find, to date, to distribute the total sewer cost throughout the City is to tie it to water use.

If I am elected as an Alderman, I would be willing to investigate whether there was a better way to share the cost among all users, but we must keep in mind that the cost is set and must be paid by the City.  In addition, controlling infiltration and inflow (I&I) from storm water into our sewer pipes will help reduce the total cost to the City.
