Forgirlsake to Host Women's Tennis Tournament to Support Education

Forgirlsake, a charity founded in 2007 that aids education for young girls around the world, is hosting its first sporting event at Newton North High School on Sept. 28 (rain date is Sept. 29). For the Love of Girls’ Women’s Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Female tennis players are encouraged to register and partners can be provided from the pool of registrants, if needed. A minimum $40 donation is requested to sign up. Spectators are encouraged to give as well. Proceeds will support teenaged girls in Ghana.

Sending children to secondary school in Ghana is financially impossible for most  families, as it costs $250 a year. (The average household income there is $500.) Females are affected the most, as they are traditionally kept home to cook, provide childcare and do laundry, among other chores. Forgirlsake earmarks its funds to help young girls in developing countries finish their education, enabling them to reach leadership positions and increase their earning power. The For the Love of Girls’ Women’s Doubles Tournament is locally organized by Newtonville residents Stephanie Zelman, Sami O’Reilly, Deb Cronin and Noura Guermazi.

Based in Newton, Mass., Forgirlsake is a 501 (c) (3) organization. All donations help girls around the world obtain support for their education, in order to build thriving communities and a more equitable society.
