the summer sun at the Pequot Museum! This August, the Pequot Museum celebrates
a week
of fun summer activities for the whole family. Summer Fun Days are a great way to explore Native American history in an engaging and dynamic way. Guests join Museum educators and current members of the Pequot Tribal Nation to learn about Pequot games, traditions, and more. Events are free
with Museum admission and free to Museum members.

Animals on the Farmstead
Nature
lovers visit the Farmstead and meet the types of animals that would have lived
at Mashantucket during the 18th century. With members of Ledyard
High School’s Agricultural Program and the Pequot Museum staff, visitors learn
why pigs, sheep, cows, and goats were important to historical residents and how
they were used. Food dispensers will be available for visitors to share a snack
with the animals – children have a hands-on experience that’s a guaranteed good
time. This event is free with Museum admission, and free to Museum members.

Hone Your Hunting Skills
Native people were experts at hunting for food
using traditional methods, such as an atlatl or bow and arrow. Visitors can
practice hunting skills under the guidance of Museum educators. This event is free
with Museum admission, and free to Museum members.

Discovery Carts: Learning Centers
It’s a Pequot Museum scavenger hunt to find Native discovery carts! Visitors have to locate five different carts, including a “Fur Cart” with a variety of pelts and a “Powwow Cart” with traditional regalia for Native dancers. The “Native Games Cart” features a ring-and-pin game that’s harder than it looks, and “Green Cart” teaches guests about the four R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Respect. Lastly, gamers try to match traditional Pequot household items with their modern equivalents at the “Pot, Pouch & Pocket Cart.” This event is an exhilarating and educational experience for all ages! Free with Museum admission, and free to Museum members.

Build a Wetu with Jeff Kalin
Craft creators experience Pequot history by building a wigwam. Using the traditional tools and practices of the time, Jeff Kalin (Cherokee) of Primitive Technologies will build a wetu on the Farmstead over the course of two days. Guests join an immersive historical experience and celebrate 15 wonderful years of outdoor activity on the Farmstead. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members. Rain or shine.

Cultural Survival Bazaar
This year, the Pequot Museum is proud to celebrate its 15th anniversary. As a part of this celebration, the Museum is hosting the Cultural Survival Bazaar, a festival of indigenous arts and cultures from around the world. Cultural enthusiasts can enjoy many performances, including Hawaiian music and dance, Native American storytelling, educational displays, craft-making demonstrations and ethnic cuisine. Guests can shop for art, jewelry, clothing, crafts, decor, tribal rugs and other unique objects – with a portion of all proceeds going towards Cultural Survival’s non-profit work worldwide.
As a non-profit dedicated to the study and preservation of the indigenous cultures and societies of North America, the Pequot Museum is proud to support Cultural Survival, Cultural Survival is a global leader in the fight to protect indigenous lands, languages and cultures around the world. This is a special event in commemoration of the Pequot Museum’s 15th anniversary. At 2 pm on Saturday, guests join the 15th anniversary cake cutting ceremony in the Gathering Space and receive a commemorative gift.
