Newton Choral Society Concert

Newton Choral Society will present “Unity & Contrast” with chorus and orchestra under the direction of David Carrier. The performance features the Mass  No. 5 in A-Flat Major by Franz Schubert with soloists Susan Consoli, soprano; Pamela Dellal, mezzo; Martin Kelly, tenor; and Thomas Jones, baritone.

The concert will also include "Alto Rhapsody" by Johannes Brahms, a work for alto solo, male chorus and orchestra. The Rhapsody is a setting of verses from Goethe's “Harzreise im Winter,” a metaphysical portrayal of a soul who is urged to find spiritual sustenance and throw off the shackles of his suffering. It has powerful parallels in the life and character of Brahms.

An additional highlight of this concert will be the East Coast Premiere of “Thanksgiving Day, 1861: One Vacant Chair” by Pacific Northwestern composer Bern Herbolsheimer, with Pamela Dellal, alto soloist. The poem was written as a tribute to those who had fallen in the first year of the Civil War.

Holy Name Church is Handicapped Accessible with Free on-street parking or in area lots. Tickets are $25 ($21 for students and seniors) and may be purchased online at www.newtonchoral.org, at the door, or by calling 617-527-SING.
