Newton Resident Stanislav Antonevich to Perform at Scullers Jazz Club

"When performed by these true virtuosos, the music pulls you in and lifts you up, so the horizon seems further and further away, and  . . . you float . . . away from earthly worries"

 --Vladimir Kurilchik, Boston Russian Courier

Refreshing jazz . . . with a little ragtime . . . a little gypsy . . . a touch of theater . . . a shpritz of classical music and a hefty splash of comedy!  This is what you get when you go to a show with the "nutty" Russian duo of Antonevich & Katz--two talented, highly-skilled musicians who enjoy making music and at the same time hamming things up on stage.  One thing is clear, audiences love them and they hoot and holler, especially when Stephane Grappelli-influenced virtuoso jazz violinist Antonevich decides to improvise to some raucous ringtones from someone's cell phone!  And, Leo with his experience in musical comedy, theater and circus, is the perfect foil for Stan's deadpans.

Award-winning Russian violinist Stanislav Antonevich grew up in Jurmala, Latvia and first picked up a violin at the tender age of three.  Now Antonevich holds two Masters Degrees -- one in violin performance and the other in jazz, as well as an Artist Diploma in Solo Performance from Longy, where he had been awarded a Presidential Scholarship. While at Longy, he had the unusual distinction of winning both the Longy Concerto Competition as well as the Longy Honors Competition. His primary teachers there were Dana and Yuri Mazurkevich for classical music and Stan Strickland for jazz. He has also taken master classes with Lynn ChangOleg Krisa, and Joseph Silverstein. Stan's chamber music background includes performing in the Chamber Music Workshop with Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall. His jazz background includes workshops with the well-known European gypsy jazz violinist Vitali Imereli, a protégé of the late great Stephane Grappelli who was a major inspiration to Stan.

About Leo Loginov Katz:

Pianist, composer and theatrical director Leo Loginov Katz--born in Saratov, Russia--and now based in New York City--inherited his musical talents from his parents, both established classical musicians.  He began playing piano when he was just 4 years old, however his strongly-developing passion for improvisation and musical experiments with sound, conflicted with the strict rules of Russian musical schools, so he chose a profession in theatre. He studied acting and directing in St. Petersburg and Moscow but before and after he graduated in 1987 from The Russian Academy of Theatre Arts, he also performed at several jazz and rock festivals and composed music for films, the circus and various theatrical shows.  Now based in New York City and a well-known performer and coach, Loginov has worked with many stars in the music and theatrical fields.  Among them are Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, Carol King, Tony Randall, Glenn Close, Cy Coleman, Amy Grant, James Naughton, Bill Irvin, Harry Belafonte, Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin, Melanie Griffith, Robin Williams and many others. In addition, in early 2004, Leo joined the legendary Dr. Stanley Taub to form “VIP of NYC” also known as Virtuoso Improvisation Pianists of New York City, a group that has produced a series of successful concerts at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The Yamaha Piano Salon and Steinway Hall in New York City.
