Pneumoccal Vaccine Available by Appointment

Pneumococcal vaccine is available by appointment from the City of Newton Health and Human Services Department. Two clinics will be held at the Newton Senior Center in the coming weeks. Newton residents should contact their primary care physician to see if they need this vaccine, then call (617) 796-1420 to make an appointment.

Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria cause pneumococcal disease, most commonly pneumonia. Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) also commonly called the “pneumonia vaccine”, protects against 23 strains of pneumococcal bacteria that can lead to serious infection. While anyone can get pneumococcal disease, people 65 years and older, those with certain chronic medical conditions, those with a weakened immune system and smokers are at greater risk. PPSV is not a vaccine you get every year. It is given only once or twice in a lifetime, depending on age and medical history.

Check with your health care provider to see if you need this vaccine before calling (617) 796-1420 to make your appointment.
