  • find and identify natural specimens
  • make microscope slides
  • learn about microorganisms
  • compare and contrast movement, shape, structure, and function
  • investigate the natural world around them!

In this mini course, students learn all about the microworlds around and on them. They get to learn about how to use compound (monocular, binocular) microscopes, some of which can be brought outdoors. They also have access to a digital microscope--all with adult supervision. They learn about the organelles in a typical cell and compare single-cell organisms with multi-cell organisms.

Students investigate bacteria, human cells, plants and fungi. They learn how to make different types of slides for viewing under the microscope. They also look at prepared slides of plants, animals and recreate what they see with various art media. This is a wonderful course for the junior naturalist.
