Wellcoin User Drive

On July 9th at 4 p.m. at Gath Memorial Pool Newton Mayor Setti Warren will host the first of his “Wellcoin user drives,” a series of events hosted throughout Newton as part of “Wellcoin Month.” The Mayor designated July as “Wellcoin Month” in Newton after announcing the City’s partnership with Newton-based health and wellness startup Wellcoin in late May, when he launched the “Wellcoin Model City” initiative at a press conference held at Newtonville’s Whole Foods Market.

“Dedicating oneself to wellness doesn’t just involve what kind of foods you eat,” said the Mayor. “It involves all your daily activities. What we haven’t seen in this country is a way to combine all these activities, and measure them so that we can see the progress one can make, from an individual, a city, a state, and a national standpoint.”

The event will kick off at 4 p.m. with a press conference featuring addresses from the Mayor and from Wellcoin CEO, and 30-year Newton resident, Glenn Laffel. In addition Wellcoin will be giving away free T-shirts and frisbees, actively signing up users, and giving away promo material featuring their much sought after sign-up codes.

Gath Pool is just one of the many city venues working with Wellcoin as part of the Newton’s partnership with the company. The Newton Senior Center, Crystal Lake and Lower Falls Community Center and many other city buildings are also displaying and distributing Wellcoin promo material, and nearly every city venue features numerous Wellcoin earning opportunities. 10 minutes of swimming at Gath is worth 10 Wellcoins for example, while taking a one hour fitness class at the Senior Center is worth 60. These earning opportunities are all featured on Newton’s partner page on wellcoin.com.

The Mayor wants to get more Newton residents signed-up and taking advantage of the City programs, and is supporting Wellcoin in an effort to further promote healthy living in Newton. In the weeks since the Mayor launched the “Model City” initiative Wellcoin’s partner base has expanded rapidly, now boasting over 20 Newton merchants including prestigious national brands like Pinkberry, Legal Seafoods, Fresh City, and Whole Foods Market. The Mayor is using July to encourage Newton residents to follow the merchants’ example.
