Will You Recognize Earth Hour Tonight?

Earth Hour will take place Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 p.m.

Many homes, buildings and businesses may shine a little less bright tonight.

As part of the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour, homeowners, businesses and municipalities across the globe will shut off all nonessential lights for one hour tonight, March 23, starting at 8:30 p.m.

The WWF's Earth Hour encourages the hour of darkness "to focus on the one thing that unites us all—our planet." The movement aims to raise awareness about various environmental issues affecting the planet including energy consumption and global warming.

Here in Newton, municipal buildings will already be closed and unnecessary lights will be off, as it is a Saturday night. Nevertheless, Chief Operating Officer Bob Rooney said City Hall officials are supportive of the Earth Hour message

Will you participate in Earth Hour Saturday night at your home or at your local business? Tell us why in the comments section below.

I recognized Earth hour last night. I ran my dish washer with only one plate, idled my gas guzzling SUV for the entire hour, ran the toaster with no bread, ran the dryer empty and turned on ALL of my lights. Not only did I support my local power company, but I supported plants. CO2 is plant food. We should have more of these Earth Hours.
