Disabled Residents of Newton Affordable Housing Building Feel the Christmas Spirit

Some residents faced the possibility of spending the holiday alone when the elevator broke down.

The grinch seemed to have the upper hand this Christmas when an elevator broke down at an affordable housing building in Newton where many residents are elderly and disabled.

Many of the 58 residents living on the top two floors of the John W. Weeks House slowly made their way down the stairs with assistance and resting at each stairway landing. Four, however could not get down the stairs on their own and faced the possibility of a Christmas alone, according to a Boston Globe article.

Cataldo Ambulance Service heard of the problem at Weeks House they rushed over to help. Another woman could not be moved to a chair, but some Newton Firefighters were able to carry her down, according to the Globe. Cataldo returned later to assist the residents back upstairs.
