Five Things You Need to Know Today: Aug. 17

A chance to recycle electronics, a free concert and movie, and the last day to vote in Newton Patch's Readers' Choice contest.

1. LAST DAY to vote! Today is the last day to vote in the Newton Patch Readers' Choice competition. ranging from "best dry cleaner" to "best burger." Voting ends tonight at 11:59 p.m.! We will announce the winners in the next few days. 

2. Recycle electronics. The city's will hold a special drop-off day for electronics today from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. There will be a $12 charge to recycle each television or computer monitor, but all other appliances and electronics will be accepted free of charge. Check or cash is accepted, made payable to "CRT Recycling." A list of accepted materials is available on the city's website

3. Farmers' market. The will open today from noon to 5 p.m. at the .

4. Deadline to register to vote. In order to vote in the Sept. 6 state primary, . If you have a mail-in form, it must be postmarked by today.

5. Free concert & movie. It's Friday, and that means a free concert and movie at the in Newton Highlands. Tonight's concert will feature jazz by Beth Purcell & Friends followed by a showing of "We Bought A Zoo." Both the concert and the movie will take place outside the center, but will be moved into the gym if it rains. Admission is free and snacks/drinks will be sold during the shows.
