Four Promoted in the Newton Police Department

Four members of the Newton Police Department were promoted and sworn in on Thursday.

William Spalding and Daniel Walsh were promoted to lieutenant and John Daly and Amanda Schlegel were promoted to sergeant.

Lt. William L. Spalding

Lt. Spalding grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton North High School.

He joined the Newton Police Department in 1998 and has a bachelor’s degree with a dual major in criminal justice and psychology from Duquesne University and a master’s in criminal justice from Western New England University.

He began working in the Patrol Bureau as a patrol officer, dispatch coordinator, mountain bike officer and hostage negotiator.

He worked in the department’s Information Technology Bureau in 2002 before being promoted to sergeant in 2006 where he was a patrol supervisor. He also coordinates the RAD self-defense program.

 

Lt. Daniel J. Walsh

Lt. Walsh is a lifelong Newton resident and graduated from Newton Catholic High School. He served in the US Marine Corps and has degrees from Framingham State College and Western New England College.

He joined the Newton Police Department in 1997 and was promoted to sergeant in 2007. He has spent his entire career in the Patrol Bureau.

 

Sgt. John M. Daly

Sgt. Daly grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton North High School. He served in the US Marine Corps and was a military police officer for four years.

He worked for the Department of Justice for three years before joining the Newton Police in 1993.

He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Western New England University.

He has been a detective, patrol officer, field training officer, department stress officer, narcotics investigator and Newton Police Association president.

 

Sgt. Amanda E. Schlegel

Sgt. Schlegel was born and raised in Worcester and graduated from Doherty Memorial High School.

She joined Newton Police in 2009 and has been working nights as a patrol officer in the third platoon.

She received a bachelor’s degree in sociology and certificate in criminal justice from University of Massachusetts Amherst.

She spent time as a police recruit for Worcester Police and completed the Worcester Police Academy with her brother, Newton Police Officer Jason Schlegel.
