HISTORIC NEWTON MARCH BOOK CLUB MEETING

At its March meeting, the book club will discuss Roger Williams and The Creation of the American Soul by John Barry. In this book Barry explores the relationship between church and state and the rights of the individual versus government. At the center of the story lies Roger Williams, a believer in religious freedom and individual liberty and the man who created (in Rhode Island) the first government on earth based on those beliefs. Barry's book tells a story which is essential to the continuing debate over how we define the role of religion and political power in modern American life. The book club is free and open to the public, new members are always welcome. At the Jackson Homestead and Museum, 527 Washington Street. Newton 02458.
