Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 13

A holiday gift drive for local families, basketball and a "pay as you throw" informational meeting.

1. Holiday gift drive. 's Future Business Leaders of America Club is collaborating with to hold this week for children ages newborn to 10 (ages 8-10 are the highest demand). Gifts can be dropped off at all Village Bank locations in Newton or at Newton North High School room 319 now through Dec. 16. The Village Bank will then distribute the gifts to Newton families next week. 

2. Pay as you throw? The Board of Aldermen's Public Facilities Committee will hold a meeting tonight to discuss options for "pay as you throw" (PAYT) trash programs in Newton. The meeting is in response to  and presentation on possible PAYT programs. The meeting will be held at 7:45 p.m. in the chamber at . 

3. A cappella concert. Northwestern University's a cappella group,  a show tonight at the . Tickets are $10 and children under 10 get in for $5. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. John MacGaffey, a Newton North alum ('11), will be performing with the group.

4. Go Lions! The girls' basketball team will face Weston today in a home game at 5:30 p.m. 

5. Congrats (again!) to a local skydiver. Did you see ? Well, Touhey told Newton Patch earlier this week that his team took home another championship on Dec. 10 at an indoor skydiving competition in Nashua, NH. The team took first place in the advanced division, one division higher from where the team competed in the national meet last month.
