Residents, Organizations Honored for Preserving Newton's History

With a history as rich as Newton's it takes hard work and dedication to keep the buildings, properties and memories preserved. Each year, Historic Newton commends those residents and organizations that have worked to keep the history of Newton alive. 

The annual Preservation Awards were held on Nov. 30 at the . The evening honored several local homes as well as a Newton Highlands church.

One of the Stewardship Award winners was Alderman Lisle Baker, for his home at 137 Suffolk Road. Board of Alderman President Scott Lennon congratulated Baker for his award at the Dec. 5 board meeting.

Thelma Fleishman Personal Achievement Award 
, who recently retired as Historic Newton's curator of manuscripts and photographs. Abele started as a Historic Newton volunteer in the 1980s and has served as president of the Newton Historical Society from 1988–1990, as a trustee of the Jackson Homestead from 1990–1993 and as an archivist for the city from 2003–2005.
