Westford Town Election Moved to Coincide With U.S. Senate Special Election. Do You Approve?

Near the end of last night's Board of Selectmen meeting, the board voted 4-0-0 to combine the two dates.

As Westford's town election day and the special election to fill John Kerry's U.S. Senate seat approach, the town of Westford chose to combine the two elections on Tuesday night.

Originally the town election was scheduled for May 7, one week after the special election.

Although Selectman Bob Jefferies initially almost abstained because he is a candidate for the board in the upcoming election, the vote was ultimately 4-0-0, with Andrea Peraner-Sweet, the other incumbent candidate whose seat is up, not in attendance.

Town Manager Jodi Ross said combining the two dates would save the town $4,000 and Bob Price told the board that it was very difficult to obtain poll workers for one election, let alone two.

On the other side, Alisa Nakashian-Holsberg told the board that five 17-year-olds in town that would have turned 18 in time for the town election will now not have the right to vote in the town election.

The change also eliminates one week of campaigning for candidates, and there is a possibility that the state would reimburse the town for the additional election.

CORRECTION - The final vote was 3-0-1, Jefferies did end up abstaining.

Did the Board make the right move? Let us know in the comments.

How far and fast Westford has fallen in the past 2 years shocks me, sprawl, dope all over Westford Academy, Teachers morale very low, and trampling of our Constitutional Rights by town leadership. Clean house is well in order

The only way to bring change to this board is to encourage folks to get out and vote. Westford is at a critical stage in its evolution and the decisions we make today will have a substantial impact on what Westford will become in the future. I would appreciate your vote on election day, which I believe is now April 30th.

Just clarifying that my comments at the meeting were strictly my own, and I was not representing the Board of Registrars. The registrars did not meet to discuss the subject. It was simply my intention to state the facts regarding 5 individuals who would not be able to participate in the town election.

Hi Alisa, I apologize for the error, I will update now.

There is a RECALL provision, so I have been told, that will allow removal of those Town Officials not up for election. The direction Westford is headed it seems cleaning house with the BOS and School Committee are well in order! I am sick of Westford being the laughing stock this past year whose teachers are looking to jump ship at any possibility of employment elsewhere and our gun control proposals are out of a Fascist totalitarian police state! ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!
