Bicyclist in Monday Crash Cited for Running Red Light

UPDATE, 11:50 a.m. - The bicyclist struck at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Walnut Street Monday morning suffered minor injuries, according to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker.

Reports initially indicated the cyclist to be male, but Apotheker said it was in fact a 16-year-old female cyclist. She has been cited for running a red light.

UPDATE, 11:30 a.m. - Lt. Eric Fricke with the Newton Fire Department said the bicyclist struck this morning was transported to Children's Hospital Boston.

The call regarding the struck cyclist at Commonwealth Avenue and Walnut Street. came in at 9:05 a.m. The fire report has not yet been filed, but Fricke said the associated engine never went out of service, indicating that the accident and resulting injuries were minor and did not require additional medical and fire personnel that would have taken the engine out of service for a time.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE - A car struck a bicyclist in Newton this morning, and Newton Fire and EMS personnel are preparing to take him to hospital.
