Driver Wrestles Armed Man to the Ground After Newton Road Rage Incident

A driver managed to talk down and wrestle an armed man to the ground Thursday afternoon after a road rage incident in Newton, police said.

Byung Jin Kang, 21, of Newton, is facing multiple weapons charges after he allegedly pulled a gun on a fellow driver yesterday, according to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker.

The road rage incident sparked on Dedham Street just before 4 p.m. Thursday, Apotheker said. When the two drivers pulled over on the side of the road to speak, Kang allegedly pulled out a loaded .32-caliber gun. 

The other driver, a male, managed to talk Kang down and Kang put the gun away. At that point, the victim tackled Kang to the ground, Apotheker said. 

Kang managed to get back in his car and drive away from the scene, but a nearby officer received a description of Kang's vehicle and managed to pull him over shortly after the incident, Apotheker said. 

Kang was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (handgun) and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Newton District Court. Stay tuned to Patch for details.
