Trial Scheduled for Former Newton Police Chief Secretary

A former Newton Police secretary -- who was at the center of the investigation and eventual dismissal of Former Police Chief Matthew Cummings -- is scheduled to stand trial in March for larceny charges. 

Jeanne Sweeney Mooney, who is charged with larceny over $250, will head to trial on March 13, 2013, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. 

Newton Police filed the larceny charges in August, alleging that the former secretary took an envelope filled with cash from police permit fees as well as destroyed $1,500 in checks and a schedule of the fee payments.

The theft allegedly happened in September 2011 and Mooney was placed on paid administrative that same month

Mooney previously worked as secretary for Former Newton Police Chief Matthew Cummings, who Mayor Setti Warren dismissed from the department following an independent investigation that looked into claims Cummings verbally humiliated and kicked Mooney in 2010. 

Cummings was dismissed last month following a lengthy public hearing.

According to city officials, Mooney filed the civil complaint against Cummings in May of this year and the investigation into Cummings' behavior began shortly thereafter. The investigation concluded that there was  to Mooney as well as kicked her in the foot. 

Mooney alleges that the larceny charges are retaliation for civil action she filed against the department, according to a report in the Boston Globe. She has also filed a complaint with the city seeking $600,000 in damages. 

Mooney pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in September. She is scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 1, 2013 for a compliance hearing, the DA's office said.
