The MBTA bus driver who authorities said drove off an overpass in Newton in May—injuring eight people—wants her license back.

Shanna Shaw, 43, of Mattapan, was fired after the May 18 crash. Authorities said she was using a cell phone at the time of the crash. The MBTA has a policy that prohibits drivers from using cell phones.

Shaw claimed the crash happened because she sneezed from allergies.

In any case, her license was suspended. CBS Boston reported Shaw was in court Wednesday fighting to get her license back.

Shaw was charged with speeding, operating to endanger, impeded operation, and obstruction of justice.

The crash happened on an overpass spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike. The bus slammed through a guardrail and the front end was hanging off the overpass.

None of the injuries were serious.

There is no question the accident was caused by her sneezing. The evidence is clear. The cell phone in her hand was there because she thought she was holding a Kleenex and she even wiped her nose with the phone for proof. She wants her license back since she does not want to depend on the bus. Four years ago, I voluntarily stopped driving due to failing vision. If I can get around by the T, she can do it.
