MBTA Bus Driver May Have Been on Phone During Newton Overpass Crash: Report

Eight people were hurt.

A MBTA bus driver who nearly drove off an overpass in Newton Sunday—injuring eight people—may have been on a cell phone at the time of the crash.

WHDH/7News reported the driver, a 55-year-old woman, will likely be cited.

7News reported sources said investigators are looking into the possibility that the driver was using a cell phone when the crash happened. The bus crashed through a guardrail and the front end was hanging off the overpass.

Eight people—including the driver—were hurt. None of the injuries were considered serious.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. on an overpass spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike on Washington Street at Newton Corner. The bus was traveling on the MBTA's Route 57 line.
