A scammer took advantage of a Newton couple over the weekend.

Police received a call on Saturday from a Newton couple who were scammed out of money twice.

The man said he received a call from someone claiming to be a lawyer with the American Embassy in Mexico. The caller told the man that his son-in-law was in an accident that caused property damage. The scammer said the Newton man must send money to pay for the property damage. He put the alleged son-in-law on the phone who said he needed money, according to police.

The Newton man was told to wire money via Western Union. The Newton man and his wife went to the Western Union in Brookline and wired the money.

The following day, they received another call from the same scammer saying that more money was needed. They wired that money too.

The Newton couple realized it was a scam when they called their daughter and their son-in-law answered the phone.
