Newton Man Receives Two Life Sentences for 2009 Hyannis Murder

Newton resident Robert Upton will serve two life sentences for the 2009 murder of a Framingham man, according to the Cape Cod Times.

Barnstable Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson handed down the sentence this morning, which includes a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for the first degree murder conviction, a life sentence for armed assault inside a home and 15 years for aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Upton, 48, was accused of shooting his brother-in-law, Aris Manoloules, 47, of Framingham, in Manoloules' Hyannis vacation home.

Upton was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder.

During the trial, prosecutors argued Upton’s other brother-in-law, Treefon Manoloules, agreed to pay Upton $165,000 to kill Aris Manoloules, the Times reported.

Upton’s defense attorney claimed Upton was a victim of "circumstance" and that his nephew, Christopher Manoloules, and Treefon Manoloules were responsible for the shooting.

Treefon Manoloules was found not guilty of charges in connection with the killing in October 2011. Christopher Manoloules will face trial separately and is scheduled to be in court Jan. 24, the Cape Cod Times reported.
