Newton Police Captain Howard Mintz has been named acting police chief following an appointment from Mayor Setti Warren.

According to a report in the Boston Globe, Mintz was named acting chief earlier today and the announcement was sent in an email to City Hall administrators.

The status of current police Chief Matthew Cummings is unclear.

Controversy has surrounded the department in recent weeks . The secretary alleges, though, the charges are retaliation for complaints she filed against Cummings.

The Globe reported earlier this month that the city had hired an outside investigator to look into the allegations made by Mooney. The report was scheduled to be finished sometime this week.

Warren plans to release more details about the appointment later today, the Globe reported.
