Newton Police Log: A Damaged Sign, Stolen Mudflaps
The following information was supplied by the Newton Police Department.
Suspicious man on Columbia Avenue
Newton Police responded to Columbia Avenue on Jan. 31 after a resident reported a suspicious person who was peering into his neighbor's cars.
According to reports, the resident spotted a man ride his bicycle to Columbia Avenue and Elliot Street and peer into a Nissan Maxima and Cadillac Escalade that were parked in the a nearby driveway. The reporting party did not see the suspect try to break into the cars.

The suspect was described as a male, 5'11" tall wearing dark pants, a dark hooded sweatshirt and riding a medium-sized mountain bike.
Reports said the Nissan was locked and the Cadillac was unlocked, but neither car appeared to have been entered.

Lawn damaged by car
A Dedham Street resident told police on Jan. 31 that someone drove a car over her lawn sometime between 10 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 3 p.m. on Jan. 31.
Sign damaged on Lincoln Street
Newton Police responded to Walnut Street on Jan. 31 for reports of a sign that was damaged.
According to reports, a vinyl sign located on the bridge at the corner of Walnut Street and Lincoln Street was cut sometime between 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 6:15 a.m. on Jan. 31.
Car break-in on Russell Road
Newton Police responded to Russell Road on Jan. 31 for reports of a car break-in, reports said.
The victim told police she parked her car on the road for approximately 45 minutes, between 3:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. When she returned to her vehicle, she found the front passenger window had been smashed.
Break-in on Farmington Road
Newton Police responded to a Farmington Road home on Jan. 31 for a reported house break-in that happened while the resident was at work, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
According to reports, several pieces of women's jewelry were stolen from the home, including two 14-karat yellow gold women's watches and several 14-karat yellow gold necklaces.
Stolen mud flaps
Someone reportedly stole the mudflaps off of a woman's car while it was parked at Newton-Wellesley Hospital on Jan. 31.
According to reports, the woman parked her car at the hospital at 4:58 p.m. and when she returned at 6:30 p.m., the mudflaps had been stolen off of the 1998 Mercedes SUV.
Car break-in on Chase Street
While responding to Chase Street on Feb. 1 for reports of a car break-in, a Newton Police officer learned that another vehicle, a 2009 Chevy, had also been broken into on the street.
According to reports, the break-in happened sometime between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
