Newton man faces drunk driving charges

A Newton man was arrested on Feb. 13 after he allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol, reports said.

According to reports, a Newton Police officer was stopped at the red light on Centre Street, near the Mass. Pike, around 12:45 a.m. When the light turned green, the police officer and another car began to move forward just as a car came off Exit 17 and went through the red light at a high rate of speed.

Reports said the officer and the other car "had to stop fast to avoid a crash." The officer then turned on his lights and pursued the vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed down Washington Street, police said.

After pulling the driver over, the officer could detect a moderate odor of alcohol and noticed the man had "slow and deliberate speech" as well as eyes that were "slow to focus."

Miceal Chamberlain, 66, of 99 Gate House Road, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. He was also cited for failure to stop at a stop light and speeding.
