The following information was provided by the Newton Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Dec. 23

Police arrested John Francis Voros, 51, of 182 Beethoven Ave. Apt. 1 in Newton on charges of domestic assault and battery, malicious destruction of property under $250 and resisting arrest.

Police received a report of an apartment on Beech Street being broken into. Residents left at 8 a.m. and when they returned the apartment was ransacked. A 48-inch Sony LCD TV and a PlayStation 3 were taken. An iMac computer and a 32-inch Samsung LCD TV were also taken, along with a box full of wrapped Christmas gifts, which included clothing and a Garmin GPS unit.

Dec. 24

A man broke into the office of The Soup Factory and took money, before leaving the restaurant. The suspect was described as a light-skinned black male, about 6-feet tall, 200 pounds, wearing a black hat, a white or khaki coat, a red tie and blue jeans.

Several strands of Christmas lights were cut at a home on Davis Avenue. The family left the lights plugged in and when they returned two sets on the left side of the house had been cut near the driveway. The wires appear to have been cut with wire cutter, and two blow up lawn ornaments had been knocked over, but not damaged.

Dec. 25

Police arrested Timothy F. Murtagh, 55, of 50 Jefferson St. in Newton, on charges of assault with dangerous weapon and domestic assault and battery.
