Newton Police Log: Youth Harasses July 4 Revelers, Man Approaches Woman in Car

July 4:

An intoxicated man wearing no shirt and leather armbands with metal spikes was running aggressively toward groups of people, including children - who had gathered at the Fessenden School to watch the fireworks, Police said. A 16-year-old male from Newton was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon (leather armbands with metal spikes), Police said.

On July 4, a Cottage Place resident was in bed when he heard something crash into the wall of his bedroom, a resident of the house said. He turned on the light and found what appeared to be damage from a shotgun slug, Police said. As residents were calling police a second shot struck a window frame near where they were standing. On July 5, a 53-year-old man was arrested and will be charged with unlawful possession of a shotgun and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence.

Two men posing as Newton Water Department employees and went to a home where one of the men asked to see a fence. The other man entered the home and asked to see the basement, but the resident refused. The two men left the home and nothing appeared to be missing. The suspects were described as Hispanic males in their 30s, and used walkie-talkies and spoke in both English and Spanish. Both had city identification cards around their necks but the Water Department said no one had been sent to that address, Police said.

A Tennyson Road resident came home and found that the window to a basement door had been smashed and an interior door had been kicked, but did not open, Police said.

A woman walking her dog on Albemarle Road at Crafts Street said a car approached her and the driver asked how old she was. She said it was none of his business and the man said “she was going to be his tonight,” Police said. She said she would call police, and the man said he would be back for her and drove off. The driver was described as a skinny white male in his late 20s with a buzz cut, a goatee and black hair, Police said. He was wearing a Denver Broncos jersey and drove a beige or gold sedan about 7-10 years old and had yellow fog lights under the headlight, Police said.

 

July 6:

Police patrolling Cold Springs Park got a report of kids walking in the park after hours and found a small fire burning in the middle of the field. Three males from Newton – two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old – will be summonsed to court on charge of wanton defacing or damaging of property, Police said.
