Newton Police Log: Indecent Assault at Library, Two Drunken Drivers Nabbed

The following information was provided by the Newton Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Sept. 27

Police arrested Steve J. Etienne, 31, of 18 Mansfield St. Apt. 1 in Allston, on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older.

Police arrested Shawn T. Murhphy, 32, of 17 Walden St. Apt. 6 in Revere, on a probation default warrant out of Newton District Court.

Newton Police and Fire departments responded to a report of a fire at a restaurant on Commonwealth Avenue. It turned out to be a menu that was set on fire.


Sept. 29

A two car accident occurred on Lexington Street, where an Acura and an Infiniti were up on a sidewalk. An officer detected a moderate odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver and she had red glassy eyes. Rebecca F. Berlage, 27, of 199 Lexington St. Apt. 35 in Newton, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and marked lanes violation.

Police arrested Joseph Peter Colell III, 30, of 15 Highland Park Apt. 2 in Newton, on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery and intimidating a witness.


Sept. 30

A driver reported a car stopped on Washington Street near the ramp from Rte. 28 with the driver asleep behind the wheel and the car still in drive. When police arrived the car was straddling the line where the far left and middle lanes of Washington Street. The officer approached the car and the driver sped off and crossed over two lanes of traffic without signaling and entered the onramp to 128. The car stopped and when the officer spoke to the driver she had glassy eyes and she had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. Eileen O'Neill, 25, of 356 Lincoln St. in Waltham, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and marked lanes violation.
