Newton Police Will be Looking Out for Drunken Drivers Over the Holidays

A grant will pay for extra officers to be on the streets of Newton.

Newton will have extra police patrolling the streets during the holiday season keeping an eye out for people driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Newton Police Department received a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security for the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, said Newton Police Officer Dan Devine.

The federal funds are distributed by the state. The grant will cover overtime hours for officers to patrol the streets looking for impaired drivers from Dec. 13 to Jan. 1, Devine said.

"It is like Click It or Ticket (the seatbelt campaign) but it focuses on drinking and driving," Devine said. "We got money to cover overtime hours so the offices will not be assigned to patrol and are not responding to calls."
