A former Newton elementary school teacher is likely to be indicted in Suffolk County on child pornography charges, prosecutors said in court this morning.

Although he did not sit in the courtroom during proceedings, David Ettlinger, 34, of Brighton, was at Brighton District Court this morning for a pretrial conference. The case has been continued to March 15 for a probable cause hearing.

The former Underwood Elementary School teacher faces child pornography and related charges in both Suffolk and Middlesex Counties. He is currently held in jail and is also facing federal charges stemming from his alleged use of the child pornography site known as "Dreamboard."

Ettlinger was arrested at his Brighton apartment on Jan. 17 on charges of possession of child pornography. He was subsequently arraigned in Brighton District Court and held on $10,000 cash bail.

The next day, Ettlinger was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on charges of indecent assault and battery on a child and held on $100,000 bail.

On Feb. 7, Ettlinger was indicted in Middlesex County and arraigned in superior court on charges relating to an incident involving a young girl he babysat. He was held on $50,000 cash bail. The Middlesex County charges include:

  • Five counts of aggravated indecent assault and battery on a child under 14
  • Posing a child in a state of nudity
  • Posing a child in sexual conduct
  • Possession of child pornography
  • Secretly recording a partially nude person

In addition to teaching in Newton, Ettlinger was also a counselor for a couple of years until about 1997 at the Jewish Community Center's Camp Grossman, which straddles the Westwood-Dover town line on Dover Road.

None of Ettlinger's alleged victims have been identified as Newton students, officials say.

Ettlinger is scheduled to be back in West Roxbury District Court tomorrow for another pretrial conference.
