UPDATED 10:15 p.m.: More than 2,000 NSTAR Customers Still Without Power in Newton

NSTAR is reporting that as of 8 p.m., the number of Newton customers without power has actually gone up from 2,005 to 2,338.

The outages make up just under 6 percent of the total NSTAR customers in Newton. 

moved through the region. At that time, NSTAR explained that as the power company works on restoring electricity to homes, they sometimes need to cut power to a whole circuit to make the repairs, as NStar employees cannot work on the power lines while they are live.

Newton residents via Twitter are still reporting outages in areas near City Hall as well as some areas off Route 9 near Parker Street. 

9:30 p.m.

According to Caroline Allen, a spokesperson for NSTAR, crews are still assessing the damage from last night's storm and therefore cannot give an official estimate on full restoration in Newton.

Allen noted that 3,000 employees are responding to the outages in addition to extra tree and utility crews. Some crews are being shipped in from Michigan, NSTAR reported, as the utility company is under a Level 5 Emergency Response Plan – the same severity level activated during Tropical Storm Irene.

Allen said another update should be posted shortly.

6:20 p.m.

As of 4 p.m., NSTAR is reporting about 2,200 Newton customers without power. 

According to Mayor Setti Warren's office, power is expected to be back on in Newton homes by 9 p.m. Sunday. 

In an email sent this afternoon by Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail spokesperson Andrea Wheeler, commuters traveling on the Framingham/Worcester line Monday morning should expect some delays due to speed restrictions on the rails. 

3:25 p.m.

According to NSTAR, around 3,162 residents in Newton were without power as of noon. 

The  sent an email out this afternoon saying that it has re-opened and classes will run as scheduled. 

11:15 a.m.

A surprising October snowstorm left quite an impact on much of Massachusetts Saturday night, with some towns spending Halloween weekend in a winter wonderland.

According to NSTAR, 3,203 customers in Newton were without power as of 8 a.m. Reports via Twitter have come in with information about outages in Newton Centre as well as the Chestnut Hill area. 

An emergency parking ban in Newton was put in place as of 11 a.m. Saturday night, according to an announcement made by Mayor Setti Warren. 

Any residents with snow-related issues are encouraged to dial 311 from any Newton landline to report problems to the city. Those with cell phones can dial 617-796-1000.

Although this storm may not have been as serious for Eastern Massachusetts, it reminds Newton residents that is in place this winter, which requires homeowners to shovel snow on any sidewalks adjacent to their property. 

In an email sent Sunday morning, the informed patrons that the JCC will be closed today due to a power outage. 

The sixth annual was also canceled today due to the snow. 

If you're traveling today, the Mass DOT Twitter feed said as of 8:30 a.m., the Massachusetts Turnpike was open in both directions (from the New York line to Boston) and speed restrictions were lifted. 

However, if your'e traveling on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail line today, note that speed restrictions on the rails are causing some delays. Check the MBTA website for updates on the delays. 

In a RailMail email sent Sunday around 11:15 a.m., the MBCR reported that there are delays "due to numerous power outages and fallen trees on tracks as a result of last nights storm. Work will continue throughout the day to restore normal service." 

As of 7:50 p.m. Saturday night, Governor Deval Patrick had declared a state of emergency.
