Off-Duty Waltham Police Officers, Firefighter Save 14-Year-Old Girl Pinned Under Car

The girl and an 18-year-old male were struck by the vehicle Thursday afternoon in front of True Value Hardware on Lexington Street in Waltham.

Two off-duty Waltham police officers and an off-duty firefighter used a jack to lift a car off of a 14-year-old girl Thursday afternoon in front of True Value Hardware on Lexington Street in Waltham.

The girl and an 18-year-old male, both Waltham residents, were walking on the Lexington Street sidewalk shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday when an 18-year-old female from Newton driving a 2007 Hyundai Sonata struck them, according to a Waltham police release. The driver was exiting the Waltham Athletic Club driveway, police said.

The male victim was thrown to the side by the vehicle. The girl was dragged under the vehicle, across the street, onto the sidewalk in front of True Value, at 238 Lexington St., according to police.

Off-duty Waltham Police Officer Jeffrey Fogg was on the scene and immediately radioed for help, police said. Fogg then got a floor jack from Boston Muffler and, with help from off-duty Waltham Police Det. Sgt. Steven Fournier and off-duty Waltham firefighter Matthew MacEwen, who both witnessed the crash, lifted the vehicle off of the victim, who had been pinned under its weight, according to the release.

The girl was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with serious injuries. The male was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, but the driver did not appear to be impaired in any way, according to police.
