UPDATED: Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Route 128 in Newton

The incident happened near the rest area, between Grove Street and Route 16.

State Police issued a press release this afternoon with more details on the accident and the pedestrian struck this morning.

The MassDOT Twitter account posted an update at 9:50 a.m. stating that the scene on Route 128 has been cleared and all lanes are open. However, drivers should expect residual traffic delays.

According to Google Maps traffic, the southbound lanes on Route 128 are still at a standstill from Burlington (Route 3) to Newton. The northbound lanes are still slow through Needham to the Mass Pike.

9:17 a.m.

At this time, traffic is still at a standstill on Route 128 northbound and southbound in Newton, according to Google Maps traffic. Route 128 south is backed up past Route 3 in Burlington and north is backed up from Route 95 to the Mass Pike.

8:08 a.m.

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 128 this morning near the Newton rest area, between Route 16 and Grove Street, according to a State Police statement.

The victim was in the highway's median strip, State Police said, and may have been struck while trying to cross the highway around 6:30 a.m.

The victim has not been identified at this time. 

Traffic is backed up on both sides of the highway, with both southbound and northbound lanes closed at this time, State Police said.

A pedestrian was reportedly struck and killed on Route 128 in Newton this morning.

The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Exit 21, according to WCVB. Traffic was backed up for about 6 miles in both directions as the two left southbound lanes and a northbound lane were shut down.

Breaking News Network alerts indicate the pedestrian is a male who was struck in the southbound travel lane by a car traveling in the northbound travel lane. 

As of 7:45 a.m., WBZ traffic and news reporter Michelle Roberts said there is a 15-mile backup on Route 128 with lanes closed in both directions, according to her Twitter account.
