Police Log: Newton Centre Hit with Car Break-ins, Vandalism

Newton Police responded to several reports of vehicle break-ins and vandalism in the area of Newton Centre on Friday, Feb. 1:

• According to reports, officers responded to two reported car break-ins on Chase Street. One vehicle, a 2012 grey Chevy Silverado, was entered sometime between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Friday. Another vehicle, a 2009 Chevy van was entered around the same time. The department's K-9 was brought to the scene to search for a scent, with negative results.

• Police also responded to Hereward Road on Friday after a property manager reported malicious damage done to one of his tenant's vehicles. The vehicle was parked near the field and a large rock had landed in the front passenger seat. 

• A man on Braeland Road told Newton Police that someone had slashed his front driver's side tire sometime between 11 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m Friday. 

• A woman told police she parked her 2004 Toyota sedan in the Newton Centre municipal lot around 11 p.m. on Thursday and when she returned around 8 a.m. Friday, all four of her tires were flattened.

• Police responded to Jackson Street for reports of two car break-ins. According to reports, the owners parked the unlocked cars, a 2000 Honda Civic and 2000 Nissan Maxima, in their driveway around 6 p.m. Thursday. When they returned to the cars around 6:30 a.m. Friday, the vehicles were rummaged through.

• Police responded to another incident on Jackson Street Friday for reports of a vehicle break-in. Around 9 a.m. Friday, the owner found the door to his car open. There were no signs of damage on the vehicle and it is possible the owner left the door open, reports said.

Family disturbance leads to arrest

A Newton woman was arrested on Feb. 3 after police responded to Lexington Street for reports of a family disturbance.

Crystal Metzler, 34, of 313 Lexington St., was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery, police said.

Assault, destruction of property

A Newton teen will have to appear in court for an alleged assault that occurred on Tremont Street on Feb. 3.

According to reports, the 17-year-old male will have to appear in court for charges of assault and battery and destruction of property over $250.

Man tries to bail someone out, gets arrested himself

A Newton man was arrested on Feb. 3 after he allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol. 

According to reports, police were called to the Newton Police Headquarters lobby on Feb. 3 for a possibly intoxicated man looking to bail someone out.

Police said the man smelled strongly of alcohol, had glassy eyes and appeared unsteady on his feet. He also had to grab the front desk to steady himself, reports said.

After giving the man a field sobriety test, he was placed under arrest. 

Shaun MacEachern, 40, of 313 Lexington St., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. 

Domestic disturbance leads to arrest

A Newton man was arrested on Feb. 3 after police responded to Madison Avenue for reports of a domestic disturbance.

Stanley Robert Day Jr., 50, of 11 Madison Ave., was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness, police said.
