MBTA Bus Driver Fired After Nearly Driving Off Newton Overpass

Shanna Shaw was allegedly using a cell phone at the time of the crash.

The MBTA bus driver who nearly drove off an overpass in Newton earlier this month—injuring eight people—has been fired.

WHDH/7News reported Shanna Shaw was let go after the May 18 crash.

Authorities said Shaw was using a cell phone at the time of the crash. The MBTA has a policy that prohibits drivers from using cell phones.

Shaw claimed the crash happened because she sneezed from allergies.

Shaw was charged with speeding, operating to endanger, impeded operation, and obstruction of justice. Her driver's license was also suspended.

The crash happened on an overpass spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike. The bus slammed through a guardrail and the front end was hanging off the overpass.

Eight people—including the driver—were hurt. None of the injuries were considered serious.
