UPDATED: Driver Cited After Accident on Dedham Street in Newton

The accident was reported just before 12:30 p.m.

A 49-year-old woman from Saugus was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital this afternoon after she struck a pole while driving on Dedham Street.

The woman was cited for a marked lanes violation, police said.

According to Newton Police reports, the car was traveling in a funeral procession on Dedham Street when the driver veered off the road and struck a pole near 925 Dedham St.

Police officers who responded to the scene spoke with others who were behind the car in the funeral procession. All of the witnesses stated that they were traveling along at about 20-25 mph when suddenly the car veered off the road and hit a pole.

According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, four people were in the car at the time of the accident. Reports indicate two people were transported to the hospital.

Four passengers were transported to the hospital this afternoon after a car they were riding in smashed into a pole near 925 Dedham Street in Newton, according to scanner reports. 

The incident happened around 12:28 p.m. near the intersection of Dedham Street and Brookline Street, scanner reports said. 

Newton Fire Ladder 3 and Medic 1 initially responded to the scene and additional ambulances were requested for transport, according to scanner reports.
