UPDATED 10:20 a.m.: Pedestrian Struck in Newton Centre

The driver of the vehicle involved with the accident has contacted Newton police. She initially fled the scene.

Newton Police have cited the driver involved in the accident.

Police could not provide an update on the status of the pedestrian.

According to a Tweet from the Newton Police Department, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash has been identified as a 26-year-old woman from Newton.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.

According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, the woman who was driving the car involved in the accident has contacted Newton Police. 

Police are speaking with the driver now and the accident is still under investigation.

An elderly man was struck by a car this evening while crossing Centre Street in Newton Centre, Newton Police and Fire officials reported. 

According to Newton Fire Department Spokesman Lt. Eric Fricke, the man was struck by a car traveling northbound on Centre Street. The man was reportedly in the crosswalk at the time of the incident. 

Fricke reported that the pedestrian was transported to Beth Israel Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two firefighters stayed on board the ambulance with the man to provide care. 

According to Newton Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, the incident happened just after 5:30 p.m. The car reportedly fled the scene of the incident, however, no one witnessed the accident to provide a thorough description of the vehicle. 

Police believe the vehicle involved was a silver Toyota, Apotheker said. 

According to scanner reports, the vehicle's side-view mirror was left at the scene of the accident.

A pedestrian was reportedly struck in Newton Centre this evening near the intersection of Centre Street and Langley Road.

According to scanner reports, the driver involved with the accident did not stop and reportedly left the scene heading down Centre Street toward Newton Corner. 

Scanner reports indicate a silver side-view mirror of a Toyota was left at the scene. Responders also believe the car has a smashed headlight. 

The pedestrian was transported to Beth-Israel Hospital, according to scanner reports.

Police have shut down parts of Newton Centre to investigate the accident, including Centre Street and Pleasant Street, reports said.
