State Police: 18-Year-Old Killed While Crossing Route 128 in Newton

State Police have identified the victim killed this morning on Route 128 in Newton.

4:53 p.m.

WCVB is reporting this afternoon that the teen who was struck on Route 128 worked at the Honey Dew Donuts at the Newton rest stop. 

The accident happened near the rest stop, just north of exit 21.

It initially reported the teen worked at McDonald's. However, the story has been corrected with the information that he worked at Honey Dew Donuts.

The owner-operator of the shop told WCVB the teen had only been working at the fast-food restaurant for a short time. 

1:45 p.m.

The pedestrian struck and killed on Route 128 in Newton this morning was an 18-year-old man attempting to cross the highway on foot, State Police said this afternoon.

State Police say the man was killed while crossing Route 128 near the Newton service plaza, just north of Exit 21, around 6:30 a.m.

According to a press release sent this afternoon, the man was hit by a car on the southbound side of the highway, and was thrown across the median onto the southbound side of the road, where he was hit by another vehicle.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene. Police say they are notifying his next-of-kin. 

As of this afternoon, no charges have been filed in the accident.

Following the accident, lanes on both the northbound and southbound side of the highway were shut down. Morning commuters dealt with slow-moving traffic for hours.

Around 10 a.m., MassDOT posted on Twitter that all the lanes on the route had been reopened. According to Patch's traffic page, traffic seems to be moving as normal.

Massachusetts State Police Release--01032013 Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Newton

The Massachusetts State Police investigation into this morning’s fatal pedestrian crash on Route 95 in Newton remains ongoing. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, an 18-year-old man, was apparently crossing the highway on foot at approximately 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by a motor vehicle on the northbound side of the highway, thrown across the median into the southbound side, and struck again on that side of the highway. He was determined to be deceased at the scene. State Police are in the process of making notifications to next-of-kin. Because that process is ongoing, we will not release any further information – including the victim’s name, hometown, and why he was at that location – at this time. As of this point, no charges have been filed.

The first call reporting the crash was received at 6:33 a.m. The location was Route 95 north of Exit 21.

The investigation is being conducted by Troop H of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. 

No further information is being released at this time.
