Suspicious Man Reported Wednesday Near Bigelow Middle School in Newton

Two middle school students reported being followed in the area of Waverley Avenue and Vernon Street in Newton.

Two female middle school students reported being followed by a suspicious male near Bigelow Middle School yesterday, according to an alert sent Thursday by the Newton Police

The two females told police they were walking near the school shortly before 3 p.m. when they saw a man leaning against a gold Honda SUV. As the two girls walked to the intersection of Waverley Avenue and Vernon Street, the man got into his car and followed them to the intersection of Waverley Avenue and Tremont Street, reports said.

The man did not say anything to the two girls, but was "staring and smiling" at them, reports said.

The suspect was described as a white male, 50- to 60-years old, short in height, skinny build, white hair, "funny looking teeth," wearing glasses and a blue jacket.

The vehicle had Massachusetts license plates, but the number is unknown at this time.

Anyone with any information on the suspect is asked to contact the Newton Police Department at 617-796-2100 or use the anonymous Tips Line at 617-796-2121.
