Three-Alarm Fire Rips Through Newtonville Ave. Building

According to scanner reports, companies were evacuated from the building.

Updated at 7:49 p.m.: According to scanner reports, the heavy fire on Newtonville Ave. has since been knocked down.

On Twitter, Anthony Miller of WHDH reports that it appears a dishwasher was the cause of the fire.

Updated at 5:33 p.m.: 
Massachusetts State Police said smoke from the fire has caused Mass Pike traffic to slow to 40 mph in the area. Police are asking motorists to expect delays on the Pike. 

Updated Saturday at 5:14 p.m.: According to the Newton Fire Department, the fire is taking place at a three-story Victorian single-family home.

Further scanner reports indicate that while towers continue to work to combat the flames, a collapse zone has been set up.

Original Story, Saturday at 5:00 p.m.: A three-alarm fire was reported on Newtonville Ave. Saturday evening, requiring mutual aid to the scene as flames raged through multiple levels of the Newton building.

According to scanner reports, flames at 355 Newtonville Ave. originated on the first floor and reached the top of a three-story building.

Four lines were reportedly operating at the scene, but just before 5 p.m. scanner reports indicated that firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building immediately.

During firefighting efforts, gas lines were shut off and mutual was called to cover for Newton crews. According to Twitter users, drivers on the Mass Pike are able to see black smoke billowing from the building.
