UPDATED: Wellesley Crash Lands Newton-Wellesley Hospital Doctor in Cuffs

An ER doctor from Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been arrested and charged following a crash on Friday morning at the intersection of Washington Street and State Street in Wellesley.

Kristin Howard, 56, the driver, was arrested and charged with operating to endanger, operating under the influence of liquor and drugs, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of class B and D drugs, according to police. 

The Wellesley Police Department have released crash footage from the intersection, and the crash itself occurs at the 1:05 mark on the video embedded to the right. The vehicle appears as though it is airborne for a few seconds before colliding into a vehicle stopped at a red light. 

WCVB confirmed that Howard is registered as an emergency care physician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and report that prosecutors say she has been prescribing medicine to herself.

Howard reportedly came from the Whole Foods parking lot, where she crashed into a fence and a delivery truck before speeding across the parking lot and into the intersection.

Scanner reports indicated that the morning's crash was a three-car crash, and two patients needed evaluation by EMS on the scene. Multiple cars were involved in the collision. Wellesley Police and two ambulances were among the initial responders. 

One victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

"We are very sad and surprised by this incident," said Newton-Wellesley hospital Director of Public Affairs Brian O'Dea. 

O'Dea said the hospital was notified of Howard's arrest on Friday and immediately relieved Howard of all patient care responsibilities. The hospital will make a final decision over the next couple of days on whether Howard will stay at the institution. 

Howard has been working at the hospital since 1999, O'Dea said, and both the hospital and the state Board of Registration in Medicine are looking into the charges against Howard.

After looking at the crash video, the hospital is "tremendously grateful" the accident did not result in any serious injury or death, O'Dea added.
