Another U.S. Senate Candidate Drops Out of the Race

Somerville's Bob Massie is the second Democrat to drop out of contention.

Bob Massie this morning announced he is dropping out of the race to challenge Republican Scott Brown for his U.S. Senate seat.

Massie is the first candidate to follow Newton Mayor Setti Warren in leaving the race. Warren dropped out last week, saying, "I did not see a clear path to victory."

Massie said his reason for dropping out was the vastly changed recent dynamics of the race.

"Politics is about having a real sense of vision about what could happen — but also about realism," Massie said in a phone call to Patch.

Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Warren jumped into the race earlier in September, and has since been the heavy favorite in voter polls.

Massie participated in the first debate of all the candidates on Tuesday at UMass-Lowell.

Massie says it is too soon for him to decide on endorsing fellow candidates who are still in the race. But he says he wants to stay involved and engaged because he strongly believes that U.S. Sen. Scott Brown does not reflect Massachusetts' values.

But for right now, Massie says, "I have no plans at all...it's a wide-open vista."
