Five Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 7

1. The election is over. Looking for Newton results? We have all the details on the winners and the numbers here. 

2. Boston Jewish Film Festival. The Boston Jewish Film Festival kicks off today. The Newton-based festival will have its first showing tonight at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline with Life in Stills, which starts at 7:30 p.m. or visit the BJFF website. Tickets are $25 or $20 for students/seniors/members.

3. Body Image in Modern Media Culture. The Newton Free Library will host a workshop tonight titled "Widening the Lens: Body Image in Modern Media Culture." Katie Heimer, the community and education coordinator at Multi-Service Eating Disorders Association, Inc (MEDA), will look at the messages the media puts out and show you how to use critical thinking skills when viewing such images. Teens age 13 and up are welcome. 

4. Be careful -- new scam. The Newton Police Department issued the following alert yesterday: "Sweepstakes Scam called by Mr. Washington at (801) 803-6002. Mr. Washington tells you to get a $500.00 refillable Green Dot card, and then give him the numbers on the card to facilitate the delivery of $2.5 Million Dollars and a new Mercedes that you have won. Residents should know upon receiving these numbers Mr. Washington can activate the card and spend the $500.00 on the card. Never agree to anything over the phone, and NEVER give personal information over the phone. If you don't know a number calling you, don't answer it."

5. Open mic. Cafe Sol Azteca will host an open mic/spotlight series show tonight starting at 6:30 p.m. The Open Mic night will be hosted by Mike Walsh who ran the event last year. Mike will perform an opening set from 6:30 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. Then, the spotlight performers will go on from 7:15 p.m. - 9 p.m. At 9:10 p.m., the open mic portion of the night will begin and local musicians are encouraged to play 2-3 songs each.
