Former Newton City Hall Employee Charged with Forgery

The assessors office employee was charged with falsely giving tax exemptions.

A former Newton City Hall employee has been charged with forgery after he was accused of wrongly giving elderly residents a $1,000 property tax exemption last year.

Stanley Dobies, 62, is facing charges of forgery and filing a false report by a public worker, the Boston Globe reported.

Dobies was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges, the Globe reported. He could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

According to the Globe report, Dobies had been employed with the city for 26 years, but had been on medical leave for the last 19 months. He resigned on Nov. 20 as a result of the city's investigation.

The city has increased oversight of the program and the assessor's office has started an internal audit to see if the alleged forgeries go back further than one year, the Globe reported.
