How Safe is Massachusetts?

A study recently found that although Massachusetts is the overall safest state in the US, it ranks alarmingly low on a few measures of safety.

WalletHub, a personal finance social media network, recently followed up its analysis of 2014’s Best & Worst Cities for Families with an in-depth look at the Safest States to Live In and ranked Massachusetts as the number one safest state in the US.

However, while the state is clearly doing well in some safety measures, particularly financial and workplace safety, its rankings in other categories are alarming. Massachusetts ranked fourth in murder and non-negligent manslaughter per capita, and ninth in sex offenders per capita.

  • 39th – Public Hospital Rankings

  • 41st – Assault per Capita

  • 8th – Percentage of People Who Spend More Than They Make

  • 4th – Annual Consumer Savings Account Averages

  • 12th – Number of Climate Disasters (over 1 billion in damage)

  • 3rd- Percentage of People with a Rainy Day Fund

  • 3rd - Lowest Bullying Incidents Rate

  • MA was also ranked number one in overall financial safety and driving safety, fifth in workplace safety, 25th in natural disasters, and second in home and community safety.
