Newton Updates From The Polls

12:40 a.m. In case you missed our earlier articles:

  • President Barack Obama has been re-elected
  • Watertown's Marilyn Pettito Devaney defeats Newton's Tom Sheff for Governor's Council District 3

Also, according to the unofficial Newton election results, 78 percent of Newton's registered voters turned out for today's election

10:30 p.m. Elizabeth Warren has won the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts.

10:06 p.m. Joe Kennedy III has defeated Republican Sean Bielat and won the Fourth Congressional District seat, replacing retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank.

9:53 p.m. According to info from Patch reported Chris Helms, who is at the Kennedy campaign party, the room is in celebration mode as the Associated Press declares Kennedy as the winner. 

Meanwhile, per the Newton unofficial results, State Rep. Kay Khan has defeated challenger Greer Tan Swiston, earning her 10th term in the Mass. House.

9:25 p.m. Unofficial election results for Newton are below. WBZ is currently calling Kennedy as the winner for the Fourth Congressional District. 

8:54 p.m. Newton's election results are available online here. As of right now, Democrats are winning all races and all questions passing with lots of support. 

2 p.m.: According to Twitter user @Pam_Boiros, "a good percentage of possible voters had already voted" at Mason-Rice Elementary School by 1 p.m.

1:45 p.m.: At Memorial-Spaulding Elementary School, where Ward 8's second precinct went to vote, poll workers said they had very good turnout. At around 1 p.m., the ballot box read just over 850 votes, and they expect to receive around 2000 by the end of the day. 

Outside the polling location, the Memorial-Spaulding PTO is holding a bake sale, selling cupcakes to voters and parents picking up their kids for early release. Jasmine Lai, who had organized the bake sale, told Patch that the line had been past the bake sale table, and to the front door at about 7 a.m.

On hearing the estimated vote count of 2000, Lai remarked, "we may have to call in for more baked goods." 

12 p.m.: As of 11:30 a.m., 778 voters had cast ballots at the polling location for Ward 2, precinct 4 at the Newton Free Library, according to poll worker Helen Jordan. Almost 50 percent of the 2,020 registered voters had voted. 

As of 10:50 a.m., 573 voters had cast ballots at the Ward 3, precinct 3 polling place at the Newton Community Service Center. An Elizabeth Warren supporter holding signs outside, who declined to give his name, said turnout had been "brisk." so far.

As of 10:28 a.m., 554 voters had cast ballots at the Ward 3, precinct 2 polling place at Peirce Elementary School. Several provisional ballots and absentee ballots had alos been cast. Turnout was steady but slow. 

11:20 a.m. As of 10:45 a.m., 718 Newton residents had voted at the Newton Senior Center, which is the polling location for Ward 2, Precinct 3.

According to one of the poll workers at the senior center, the turnout was "crazy" this morning, around 7 a.m. -  9 a.m.

A few locals were outside the center holding signs and showing their support for candidates, including 11th Middlesex state representative Republican candidate Greer Tan Swiston. Swiston was standing outside with her husband, Rob. 

Races

U.S. Senate

  • Scott Brown (R)
  • Elizabeth Warren (D)

Brown has represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate since a January 2010 special election held to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy. Brown defeated state Attorney General Martha Coakley with 1,168,107 votes, or 51.9 percent, to her 1,058,682 votes, or 47.1 percent.

Representatives in U.S. Congress (Fourth District):

  • Joseph Kennedy III (D)
  • Sean Bielat (R)

Following the retirement of longtime Congressman Barney Frank (D-Newton), the seat for the Fourth Congressional District was left open. Democrat Joseph Kennedy III, a former assistant district attorney living in Brookline, is facing Sean Bielat, a Norfolk resident and Marine who had an unsuccessful bid against Frank in 2010.

Governor's Councillor (3rd District):

  • Marilyn Pettito Devaney (D)
  • Thomas Sheff (I)

Marilyn Pettito Devaney has represented Watertown on the Governor's Council for the past 14 years. She faces a challenge from Thomas Sheff of Newton, an attorney who ran for mayor in Newton in 2005. In 2010, Pettito Devaney defeated Belmont's Nicholas Iannuzzi.

State Senate (First Middlesex and Norfolk):

  • Cynthia Stone Creem (D)

Sen. Cynthia Stone Creem was first elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 1998 for the First Middlesex and Norfolk District (which includes Newton). She is running for re-election and does not face a challenger.

Mass. State House (10th Middlesex):

  • John Lawn (D)
  • Francis Stanton (R)

John Lawn has served as state representative for the West End of Watertown since 2011, when he won a special election to fill the seat vacated when Peter Koutoujian was named Middlesex Sheriff. He faces a challenge from Francis Stanton, a history teacher who is running for office for the first time.

Mass. State House (11th Middlesex):

  • Kay Khan (D)
  • Greer Tan Swiston (R)

Nine-term Democrat Kay Khan is running for re-election for the 11th Middlesex District seat, which covers roughly the northern half of Newton. Republican challenger Greer Tan Swiston, who currently serves as a Newton Alderman-at-Large, had an unsuccessful bid against Kahn in 2004. 

Mass. State House (12th Middlesex):

  • Ruth Balser (D)

State Rep. Ruth Balser has served the 12th Middlesex District since 1999. The district covers roughly the southern half of Newton. She is running for re-election and faces no challenger.

Clerk of Courts (Middlesex County):

  • Michael A. Sullivan (D)

Sullivan was first elected to this position in 2006 and is running unopposed for re-election.

Register of Deeds (Middlesex Southern District):

  • Maria Curtatone (D)

Sheriff (Middlsex County):

  • Peter J. Koutoujian (D)
  • Ernesto M. Petrone (Unenrolled)
